New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked lawyers to come forward to help a rickshaw-puller, who is running from pillar to post for the treatment of his seven-year-old son suffering from a genetic disorder.
During the hearing of the case, a bench of Justice Manmohan orally suggested if members of the Bar could contribute towards the treatment of the child, who is suffering from Gaucher`s disease, at AIIMS.
The court was hearing a petition filed by advocate Ashok Agarwal seeking direction to the hospital to provide free treatment to the minor. The advocate even suggested to the court to give a direction that the industrial house should contribute towards providing free treatment to the poor as part of their corporate social responsibility.
The father of the ailing child has already lost his four children, who were suffering from the same disease.
The matter will come up for further hearing on Januray 17. Gaucher`s disease is a genetic disorder which causes fat to accumulate in cells and certain organs and is characterised by bruising, fatigue, anaemia, low blood platelets and enlargement of the liver and spleen. Some forms of Gaucher`s disease may be treated with enzyme replacement therapy.
The petition says, "whether AIIMS being a government hospital is under constitutional obligation to provide free treatment to the patients who cannot afford it because of heavy cost involved.
"Or poor patients can be left to the mercy of God if they are not in a position to meet the cost of the treatment and whether the respondents 1 (Centre) and 2 (Delhi government) are under duty to arrange for the continuous and uninterrupted treatment of the patients."
