Manoj, 28, was attacked when the van reached near Hauz Khas area in south Delhi while on the way from the Saket courts.

"A prisoner was killed by some inmates in a prison van that was on way back to Tihar jail from Saket court. Over 50 inmates were in the van when the incident took place," Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) Mukesh Prasad told IANS.

Manoj was lodged in the Tihar since 2005. Police said his attackers were identified as Vishal, Raju and Salmaan.

The prisoner was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was declared dead on arrival, Prasad said.

"Initial reports said Vishal held personal grudges against Manoj. While returning from the court, he along with his accomplices attacked Manoj," a police officer said.
