Centre also sought six months time for suggesting measures to combat air pollution in the national capital.

The move comes after the Green Tribunal, in a landmark ruling, banned petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years from the National Capital Region (NCR).

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India has upheld NGT order imposing ban on vehicles in Delhi.

Earlier this month, the green tribunal had rapped the governments of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh for not complying with its 2014 order on tackling pollution.

According to a report by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Delhi had the worst air quality in the world while 12 other Indian cities also figured among the world’s worst 20.
