Koko, a female western lowland gorilla who has been learning sign language for the last 44 years, seems to be really good at it. It is said that her long-time caregiver and Stanford University graduate Penny Patterson has taught him hundreds of different signs.


The BBC is marking her upcoming 45th birthday with an hour-long documentary 'Koko: The gorilla who talks to people'. It will be premiered on BBC One Wednesday 15 June, in the UK. The documentary aims to answer one baffling question - can animals really communicate with humans?
