New Delhi: Although it stinks like decaying flesh but the blooming of gingatic corpse flower is considered as a horticulture jewel because it blooms nearly once in a decade.

On Friday, many visitors gathered in New York's botanical garden to witness the bloom of world's largest and smelliest flower- Amorphophallus titanum also known as corpse flower.


This stinky plant is a native to Sumatra's equatorial rain forest. According to biologists the flower can reach up to a height of six to twelve feet and emits pungent smell to attract pollinators.


The specimen of the rare corpse flower arrived in New York Botanical Garden in 2007 and since then horticulturists have been watering and fertilizing it with utmost care. Their excitement level reached its peak when they spied the long-awaited flower bud on the stalk. After almost 80 years, titan-arum has been put on display at the Garden 


To mark this special occasion, the Garden extended its summer hours from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. EDT so that guests could get a glimpse (and a whiff) of the stinky flower, as per Live Science reports. However, the decade long wait generally lasts in two days because the flower dies promptly within 24 to 36 hours.
