Zee Media Bureau/Deepak Nagpal New Delhi: Exit poll results have forecast what many in Delhi had been saying ever since Arvind Kejriwal quit as the chief minister – that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will suffer the consequences of the decision in the Lok Sabha polls 2014. As exit polls show, the AAP is likely to win between 0 to 2 seats in the national capital out of the total 7. The BJP, on the other hand, will win 5 seats riding on the Modi wave. The Congress, on expected lines, will face a complete rout. Ever since the national poll bugle was sounded in March, Delhi was among the states/UTs that were watched closely. Till the 2009 elections, Delhi had always been a two-way contest between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. However, the emergence of Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party changed the scenario if the December 2013 Assembly Elections were any indication. The Congress, which had been in government for the last 15 years, was uprooted from the corridors of power. The AAP had even gone on to form the government with outside support from the Congress but the shaky government could survive only 49 days, with CM Kejriwal putting in his papers over the issue of the Delhi Jan Lokpal Bill. Kejriwal was criticised for `running away from responsibility and fulfilling his election promises`. Some of the theaterics of Kejriwal and his ministers also caused disenchantment among the middle-class voters. As exit polls results show, most of the educated middle class in the capital seems to have voted for stability at the Centre by giving the maximum vote share to the BJP. In the 2013 Assembly elections, the BJP had emerged as the single-largest party in Delhi. And with the Modi wave sweeping the country, the party appears to have put up a good show in the Lok Sabha polls as well. Five seats for the BJP means the party has eaten into the AAP`s voteshare considerably within a span of few months. As regards the Congress, the party will likely see its tally come down to zero from seven in 2009 – from a clean sweep to a complete rout. BJP`s performance as predicted by exit polls is in sharp contrast to the forecast made in pre-poll opinion surveys, which had put the AAP much ahead of the BJP and the Congress in Delhi. All said and done, it appears that the Modi wave has blown both the Congress and the AAP away from Delhi.
