New Delhi: Praising the Election Commission`s (EC) order to the Gujarat authorities to file a First Information Report (FIR) against BJP`s PM nominee Narendra Modi and the electronic media that showed him flashing the "lotus" near the polling booth -- in violation of election laws, Union Minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday said he is happy about the decision taken by the EC.
“I`m happy someone registered an FIR against him, EC should be commended,” Sibal said.
He added, “Somebody should file petition that this should be handled by someone else and not Gujarat police.”
Meanwhile, some other leaders of Congress today asked the Election Commission to direct Gujarat government to act neutrally on the alleged election model code of conduct violation by Narendra Modi.
Modi has "shred into pieces" the model code, Congress General Secretary Ajay Maken told reporters here.
He said displaying BJP`s election symbol `Lotus` and making a speech after casting his vote in Gandhinagar is a "big violation" of electoral law.
Another General Secretary Shakeel Ahmed said that Modi is a "habitual and serial violator" of the model code. He said that a wrong impression will go around if the Commission failed to take action against the BJP PM candidate.
In legal trouble for Narendra Modi, two FIRs were registered against him for violation of model code for elections, Gujarat police chief said today.
"Two FIRs have been registered by the city crime branch in connection with the events," Gujarat DGP PC Thakur told PTI when asked if the police has registered an FIR against Modi.
Sources in the crime branch said that as per EC directive, FIRs have been registered invoking sections specified by the poll panel.
Modi had triggered a controversy when he addressed a press conference immediately after casting his vote at a school at Ranip area of Ahmedabad, part of party veteran LK Advani`s Gandhinagar seat, where he prominently displayed BJP`s election symbol lotus. The EC`s order directing lodging of a complaint/FIR said Modi had violated the provisions of Sections 126 (1)(a) and 126 (l)(b) of Representation of People Act, 1951. The maximum punishment under these provisions of RPA is upto two years imprisonment.
Ahmedabad city police commissioner Shivanand Jha said the police had complied with the EC order and registered FIRs.
