New Delhi: In the wake of the Congress suffering a rout in the 2014 General Elections, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi are expected to offer resignations from the respective party posts.
Reports quoted sources as saying that the duo will likely offer to quit when the Congress Working Committee meets on Monday, owning responsibility for the Lok Sabha poll debacle.
There is pressure on Sonia and Rahul – the party`s top two leaders - following the party`s worst performance ever in General Elections. However, the resignation offers are likely to be symbolic as party leaders are unlikely to accept them, reports stated.
On Friday, both Sonia and Rahul had said before the media that they hold themselves responsible for the Congress` defeat.
The national party, which had won 206 seats in the 2009 General Elections, could manage to secure only 44 seats this time. "Congress has done pretty badly, a lot for us to think about. As vice-president, I hold myself responsible," Rahul Gandhi said last evening. His mother Sonia Gandhi said, "The people`s verdict is against us... As Congress president I take responsibility for the defeat."
