A cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday, approved ''in principle the draft of the agreement and protocol on Dhaka-Agartala-passenger bus service''.
The much needed approval has paved the way for the multi-modal transport link, which when materialized will be the second bus connection between the two countries after the Kolkata-Dhaka service inaugurated about two years ago. Officials of two countries early this year made a joint survey of the cross border route from Dhaka to Agartala that would be covered in about five hours.
Communications minister Anwar Hossain said that a delegation from Agartala will arrive in Dhaka on July 1 on a trial bus and a Bangladesh delegation will go to Agartala on the following day.
The two sides will also finalize a date for signing the agreement and introduction of commercial bus service.
The minister expressed the hope that the bus service will start before the end of the present government. The present government is likely to hand over power to a caretaker government by July 13.
The cabinet meeting also discussed the possibility of a Dhaka to Agartala passenger train service and was informed that construction of three to four km of rail-line from Akhaura in Bangladesh will help introduce the service.
