Thousands of Taleban fighters have been surrendering to Afghanistan's Northern Alliance, amid renewed indications that their resistance may be crumbling. Hundreds of the Taleban troops who have been under siege in their northern stronghold of Kunduz handed themselves over to alliance commanders outside the city on Saturday. The commanders say they are hopeful this is the start of a general surrender of all Taleban forces in Kunduz.
Meanwhile, a confrontation between Northern Alliance troops and Taleban forces around the village of Maidan Shahr, near the capital Kabul, is reported to have ended peacefully.
An estimated 2,000 Taleban fighters handed over their heavy weapons to the Alliance after the two sides agreed to end several days of fighting. Bureau Report
