Madurai: In a rare coordination among civic and police administrations, a 51-year-old woman got a liver transplant done here Tuesday with a green corridor being created for nearly 350 km from Puducherry to Madurai to bring the organ at a hospital in three and a half hours.

A team of specialists in transplant surgery and with Tamil Nadu police and Puducherry police efforts together the liver was transported and transplanted on time, a hospital press release said.


The organ was harvested from a brain dead patient at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Post Graduate Medical and Reseach (JIPMER) at Puducherry at 0600 hrs today. A well equipped ambulance, with a team of doctors was kept ready to transport it to Appollo super speciality Hospital here.


Police at Villupuram, Tiruchirapalli and Madurai helped monitor the real-time progress of the team and the ambulance arrived here in three and a half hours, it said.


The actual time to cover the distance is roughly six to seven hours.


At the Hospital here, a team of doctors transplanted it without loss of time.


The condition of the woman is now stated to be stable.
