“All preparations have been made for the October 28 general elections to the 26-member Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC),” deputy commissioner, Leh, Dheeraj Gupta said in Srinagar on Thursday.

“As many as 74 candidates are in fray for the 2nd general elections to the LAHDC, including 26 of J and K National Conference, 25 of Indian National Congress, 15 of Bhartiya Janata Party and eight independents,” Gupta said. More than 68,000 voters, including 33,000 women, would be exercising their franchise at 205 polling stations in the district, he informed.

“Counting of votes for all constituencies will be held centrally at Leh on November three while results would be expected by the same evening,” he added. The new council will be formed on November four. The five-year-term of the first council expired on September four, 2000. Bureau Report
