The UN Security Council Thursday formally endorsed the agreement for an interim government in Afghanistan, but deferred a decision on authorising an international military force to support it. In a resolution unanimously adopted by its 15 members, the council called on all Afghan groups to implement the agreement in full and to cooperate with the interim authority that is due to be set up on December 22.
It also called on all Afghan groups to support full and unimpeded access by humanitarian organizations to people in need and to ensure the safety and security of humanitarian workers.
The council resolution also called on donor countries and organisations to reaffirm, strengthen and implement their commitment to assist with the rehabilitation, recovery and reconstruction of Afghanistan. But it made no mention of an international military force which the Afghan agreement, signed in Bonn, Germany, Wednesday, asked the council to approve.
