Continuing her winning spree, junior world champion Koneru Humpy trounced Al-Sayed Mahamad of Qatar and emerged as the sole leader with six points after the eighth round in the first Saturday GM chess tournament being played at Budapest. Playing white, Humpy unleashed her aggressive play to defeat Mahamad in 48 moves, according to Humpy`s website updated by her sponsors on Sunday. Humpy, with six points, is 2.5 points away with three games to go to achieve her second norm for women`s GM title. She is closely followed by IM Horvath Peter and IM Jakab Attila (both Hungary) with 5.5 points each.
The 14-year-old would face Fogarasi Tibor (Hungary) in the ninth round, the website added.
