New Delhi: Delhi, the national capital, has been officially named the rape capital of India.

According to a latest study by National Crime Record Bureau, Delhi has the highest number of rape cases proportionate to its women population.


Over 1,800 rape cases were reported in Delhi in 2014 as compared to 1,440 cases that were recorded in 2013, says the study.


According to the statistics, among the four metros, Kolkata is the safest city as far as number of rape cases are concerned, with 36 cases reported.


There were 15,265 incidents of crime committed against women during 2014 in Delhi, which is 4.5 percent of crimes against women across the country, adds the data.


Mumbai recorded a 55 percent increase in cases of rape and a 67 percent rise in molestation cases from 2013.


Nearly all of India’s custodial rape - 189 of 197 cases - was reported in Uttar Pradesh.


The data also took into account involvement of minors in crimes. The statistics show that the percentage of crimes committed by minors is 1.2 percent of the total cognisable crimes. Out of the crimes in which juveniles have been involved, rape cases are only 5.93 percent.


In the data, crime against women includes rape, attempt to commit rape, kidnapping and abduction of women, dowry deaths, assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty, insult to modesty of women, cruelty by husband or his relatives, importation of girls from foreign country, abetment of suicides of women(Sec 306 IPC), Dowry Prohibition Act, Indecent Representation of Women (P) Act, Commission of Sati (P) Act, Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act and Immoral Traffic (P) Act.
