In dry state Gujarat, liquor emerges as a medicine!
Gujarat may be the first Indian state to implement total liquor prohibition in 1958, but alcohol is slowly emerging as a medicine for some of the state residents.
Ahmedabad: Gujarat may be the first Indian state to implement total liquor prohibition in 1958, but alcohol is slowly emerging as a medicine for some of the state residents.
According to a report published by BBC, Gujarat has 61,353 'patients' whose diseases can only be treated by consuming liquor. And, taking this into account, the state government's excise department has granted them permission to consume alcohol.
Despite alcohol prohibition law in effect, over 60,000 people in the state already have the permit to consume liquor, however, based on the one's health conditions, the excise department can grant permission of alcohol consumption to the needy 'patients'.
Noteworthy, no ruling party in the state so far has amended the liquor prohibition law since its enactment.
