Vanzara was jailed in 2007 for his alleged involvement in extra-judicial killings, include that of Ishrat Jahan. He secured bail in 2015.

Commenting on David Coleman Headley's disclosure that Ishrat was an Lashkar-e-Toiba operative, Vanzara said, “What Headley has said is nothing new, Gujarat Police's stand has been vindicated. But its important as it has now been said before Court. Our stand vindicated”

“It was termed as a fake encounter when it was a real encounter. All agencies and people saying encounter was fake should know that it has to be proved in court,” he said.

Questioning the probe in the Ishrat case, Vanzara said, “Investigating Officer's word that encounter was fake is not word from Gita, Bible or Quran.”
