"It is a bizarre proposal by Meneka Gandhi ji. On one hand we are trying to save the girl child, we have brought in the PC and PNDT act to ensure we curb female feticide, on the other hand the minister comes with a bizarre idea," Congress leader Shobha Oza told ANI here.

"In fact if this happens, the mother has to undergo misconduct from her own family and pressure from her own family to abort girl child from very day one. And this will adversely affect our endure to save girl child," said Oza who is also the president of All India Mahila Congress.

The Women and Child Development Minister had yesterday said she has suggested that child sex determination during pregnancy be made compulsory, that the gender of the child be registered right from that moment and the birth be tracked.

She said that in her personal view, woman should be compulsorily told whether it is a boy or girl child whom she is going to give birth and the mother`s name should be registered to be able to check whether she has given birth or not.
