Supreme Court may ban jokes ridiculing Sikhs community
The Supreme Court agreed to hear a petition demanding a ban on about 5000 websites showing the Sikh community in poor light.
New Delhi: It's been quite a long time since Santa Banta jokes have been ridiculing one community without caring about the sentiments that are hurt by them. However, the Supreme Court may soon put an end to such derision.
The Apex Court on Friday agreed to hear a petition demanding a ban on about 5000 websites showing the Sikh community in poor light.
In her PIL, styled as 'strange', petitioner Harvinder Chowdhury, a lawyer by profession, has asked the SC to issue an order to ban all websites displaying content that ridicules and insults the members of Sikh community.
According to reports, the Bench of Justice TS Thakur and Justice V Gopala Gowda agreed to hear Harvinder's petition.
Narrating her ordeal, Harvinder revealed that she has often been ridiculed by people for Sikh background. She has also asked the court for further time to prepare the case thoroughly to which the court gave a nod.
The court has adjourned the matter for six weeks.
