New Delhi: Suvra Mukherjee, the wife of President Pranab Mukherjee, passed away on Tuesday. She had been keeping unwell for some time. Here are a few facts you probably did not know about her:


  • Suvra Mukherjee was born on September 17, 1940 in Jessore ​ (now in Bangladesh) and married Pranab Mukherjee on July 13, 1957. The couple have three children - Abhijit Mukherjee, Indrajit Mukherjee and Sharmistha Mukherjee. 
  • Suvra Mukherjee migrated at the age of 10 years to Kolkata.
  • A graduate, Suvra Mukherjee was an ardent fan of India’s national poet, Rabindranath Tagore. 
  • Suvra Mukherjee was an accomplished singer of Rabindra Sangeet. She performed in the poet's dance-dramas for many years in India, Europe, Asia and Africa. 
  • She founded the ‘Geetanjali Troupe’, whose mission is to propagate Rabindranath Tagore's philosophy. She was the guiding force behind all productions of the troupe. 
  • Suvra ​Mukherjee was a talented painter who had many group and solo exhibitions to her credit. She considered her mother, who was herself a painter, as the source of her creative inspiration and her works won critical acclaim.
  • Suvra Mukherjee has written two books - Chokher Aloey and Chena Achenai Chin. Chokher Aloey is a personal account of her close interaction with Indira Gandhi and Chena Achenai Chin is a travelogue recounting her visit to China. 
  • Suvra Mukherjee had entered the portals of Rashtrapati Bhawan bringing in her harmonium and a tanpura, gifted by Bengali music maestro DL Roy. 
  • Suvra Mukherjee had close association with singer Kumar Sanu and used to launch his albums related to Rabindra Sangeet and devotional music.
