Elephants were paraded and people gathered in large numbers at the Lord Vadakkunathan temple to participate in the annual festival.

Also, artists performed Chenda melam, a percussion instrument and 'Kombu'.

Earlier, on April 14, the Kerala High Court had allowed low-decibel fireworks display in the night during the Pooram festival, exempting it from the ban imposed in the wake of Kollam Puttingal temple tragedy that claimed 113 lives.

No unauthorised chemicals should be used in the fireworks and the sound level should not exceed 125 decibel, a division bench comprising Justices Thottathil B Radhakrishnan and Justice Anu Sivaraman had said in the order.

The festival will culminate on April 18.
