New Delhi: Reacting after the Lokpal Bill was passed in Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi said that the ombudsman bill is a big success and more needs to be done to fight corruption.
Speaking to the media outside the Parliament, Rahul favoured passage of other bills pending in Parliament saying that the Congress party has more bills in the pipeline to fight corruption.
"We need more bills and we have the framework. Congress party has bills in the pipeline that need to be passed," said Gandhi.
"We`ve had big success with the Lokpal bill, we had the RTI (Right to Information) earlier," he added. The Lok Sabha today passed the Lokpal and Lokayukta Bill, 2011, which provides for formation of an anti-graft ombudsman.
Earlier, speaking in favour of the Lokpal Bill in the Lok Sabha, Rahul said that it is parliamentarians’ responsibility to complete the unfinished fight against corruption. Pitching for the smooth passage of other bills like Whistleblowers protection bill, Citizen Charter Bill among others, the Congress vice president demanded extension of the Winter Session to pass six more bills to stem corruption.
“It is not about one Bill, this is about a framework, we would like that framework to deliver to the country,” Rahul said.
“Lokpal Bill is not the only thing needed to fight corruption in this country and thus the 15th Lok Sabha should pass the six bills that are pending,” Rahul added.
The bill was passed with the amendments adopted by the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
