"Over 80 militants attacked police checkpoints in Pashtun Zarghon district on Friday. At least 10 militants and a civilian were killed when police retaliated," Xinhua quoted district police chief Ghulam Sakhi Hussain as saying.

"At least eight other insurgents, including three Taliban commanders, sustained injuries," Hussain said.

No police personnel was harmed in the clash which was continuing, the official added.

Taliban-led violence continues in Afghanistan. Afghan security forces have pressed on clearing the militants in restive provinces as they assume full security charge from NATO-led troops since January 1.
