New Delhi: Expressing grave concern for those stranded in the Chennai floods, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday urged his party workers to extend all possible assistance.

"News of heavy rains in Chennai and other parts of TN extremely worrying. My thoughts are with the people of TN as they battle incessant rains," he tweeted.


"I hope rescue and relief operations reach those in need at the earliest. I urge Congress workers to extend all possible assistance to those affected by the rains & floods," he said in a series of tweets.

In Tamil Nadu, the Army, Navy and NDRF teams have stepped up rescue operations in worst-hit localities of Chennai which is also witnessing power outages.


The non-stop torrential rains pounding the city since last night showed some let up in the morning but the inundated streets left commuters stranded.


Air and road traffic have been severely hit in Chennai. Chennai Airport authorities have shut operations till 6 am tomorrow in view of the water logging. All airlines, including Air India, have cancelled their operations from Chennai airport.
