Salem: Traders in the city on Wednesday announced a shut down on March 25 protesting alleged harassment by election authorities under the guise of carrying out checks to unearth cash meant for poll purpose.

Salem Traders Union President Jayaseelan told PTI that traders were being unnecessarily subjected to checks by election authorities affecting their business.


He said a timber merchant who was returning home in his car with collection amount of Rs 3.89 lakh was intercepted by election flying squad officials.


He was made to produce all the sales bills at around midnight following which only the moeny was returned.


Condemning such unnecessary checks of traders, traders will close down their shops and businesses on March 25, he said.
