Rao, who visited different localities in Secunderabad here as part of 'Swachh Hyderabad' campaign, said the city is now dotted with concrete structures without greenery .

The situation needs to change, he said, according to a release from his office.

Rao, who listened to the grievances of local residents, directed officials to take steps for removal of garbage in drains, laying roads and setting up bus shelters and also for controlling the menace of eve-teasers .

Referring to criticism on his comments that some land will be taken from the Osmania University here, he said land has become precious in the present times and that available land should be utilised efficiently.

"We have to build hospitals, colleges and houses for the poor. We need land to do all these things. Open lands cannot be created by KCR just like that. I said we will take some land from Osmania University and build houses for the poor," the release quoted him as saying.

"Some are burning my effigies when I say houses will be built for the poor . Political leaders are supporting them. They say don't build houses for poor. They didn?t bother about poor when they were in power. They want things to remain the same even now," the release quoted him as saying.

Universities does not need thousands of acres of land, he said.

"When the Centre wanted 500 acres for horticulture university, I told Prime Minister Modi that 50 acres is enough. He said yes. Universities does not need hundreds and thousands of acres. This is not the age of royals.Every inch in urban areas need to be used efficiently," he said.

Alleging that "cheap politics" are being played when government land is being sought to be used for building houses for poor, he said he would not "go back on doing justice for poor".

Houses for about two lakh poor in Hyderabad would be built in a phased manner, he said.

The main opposition Congress and TDP leaders found fault with Rao for his proposal to take the land of Osmania University, saying that the government should find land at another appropriate place for poor people housing instead of disturbing a reputed academic institution.
