Meerut shocker: Law student raped, beaten for rejecting surrogacy
In yet another incident of crime against women, a law student was allegedly harassed and beaten up at Jagruti Vihar area here for refusing to be a surrogate mother, police said on Monday.
Meerut: In yet another incident of crime against women, a law student was allegedly harassed and beaten up at Jagruti Vihar area here for refusing to be a surrogate mother, police said on Monday.
“22-year-old was allegedly sexually harassed, beaten by a guest house owner and his accomplices after refusing to have a baby of him,” police said.
Five persons, including owner of the guest house and of a private hospital, were arrested today morning in connection with the said case, Circle Officer Civil Lines Vandana Mishra said.
The cops have registered a case in connection with the incident which had taken place on February 3. The victim was today sent for medical examination, her statement will also be recorded before a magistrate.
According to the police, a case has been registered under section 376 (rape), section 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and other relevant sections of IPC and SC Act, PTI reported.
Speaking to reporters, the victim said, “I was beaten up badly and dragged by the guest house staff. They even tried to kidnap me.”
According to the complaint lodged by the victim yesterday, she worked at a guest house owned by Subhash Bharati in Jagruti Vihar under Medical police station area.
Meanwhile reacting sharply over the incident, social activist Annie Raja said, “Episode is shocking, shows lack of political will & social commitment.”
Former NCW Chairperson V Mohini Giri also slammed the Meerut rape case, saying “Its appalling to see how daughters, granddaughters are raped molested and thrown away,” as per ANI.
“I hope govt which has come for development will make reforms & the new Delhi CM will take up the issue as an urgent measure,” she added.
The incident occurred a day after a 28-year-old mentally-challenged woman from Nepal was brutally raped and murdered and her body was then dumped in a field at a village on the Rohtak-Hisar highway in Haryana.
As per police, the victim's naked body was found in a field near the highway in Rohtak, half eaten by animals and with key organs missing. Objects had been inserted into her; sticks, stones and condoms were stuffed into her private parts, cops said.
