Taj Mahal to undergo mud pack beauty treatment to counter effects of pollution

Agra: Taj Mahal, India`s pride and the symbol of everlasting love is losing its radiance and is constantly marred by pollution.
Due to increasing pollution in the city, the white marble is yellowing and is losing its sheen,” informed B M Bhatnagar from the Archeological Survey of India.
To restore the natural look of the iconic monument, officials have decided to give it a mud pack treatment (multani mitti) a popular Indian beauty regime. The lime-rich clay, which is already in the process of being made, will be applied all over the building and left to dry overnight.The lime-rich clay will help eliminate the discolouration and will give the natural glow to it. This will be the fourth time the Taj Mahal gets the treatment, as it was previously applied in 1994, 2001 and 2008. “When it dries the flakes are removed from the surface with soft nylon brushes and washed with distilled water to remove impurities sticking to the surface,” said Bhatnagar. ”In the last treatment, which cost around ($24,000), a team of two dozen experts had carried out the work in small sections over a period of six months to ensure that the tourist inflow does not suffer.”
