Additional Superintendent of Police Avishek Modi said the two, who suffered bullet wounds during the clash between two sides, were taken to Malda Medical College and a police picket was set up in the area where the situation was under control.

About claims by some villagers that at least 10 houses were set aflame in the area, the official said there were reports of some houses being torched during the skirmish which started at around 11 pm yesterday and went on till this morning.

Police also detained some people from the area, he said.

The injured were identified as Sadiqul Allam (45) and Motibur Rahman (25).

A section of villagers claimed two factions of the ruling Trinamool Congress clashed in the area since last midnight over turf control, but the Malda TMC leadership denied this.
