Siliguri: An elephant went on a rampage in a residential area in Siliguri in West Bengal on Wednesday, damaging several houses and buildings.

The elephant strayed from Baikunthapur forest area and entered Siliguri town.


It was first spotted at Dabgram, Fulbari areas within ward numbers 30 and 40 of Siliguri town which falls within the limits of Jalpaiguri district.


Panic-stricken people started running helter skelter and forest personnel rushed to the spot to drive away the pachyderm to the forest.


Policemen tried to control the mob and asked the people not to panic.


Several people sustained minor injuries in the melee.


The tusker destroyed many houses and buildings across Sevok Road, Chayanpara and Iskcon Temple Road areas of the town.


It was later brought under control using tranquillisers.
