The attack occurred when a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest among dozens of mourners at a Shia mosque in Amil district in southwestern Baghdad, an official source said.

The toll could rise as ambulances and police were evacuating the victims to nearby hospitals and medical centres, the source said.

Iraq is witnessing some of the worst violence in years.

Terrorism and violence have left at least 12,282 civilians dead and 23,126 injured in 2014, making it the deadliest year since the flare-up of sectarian violence in 2006-07, a UN report said.
