The man, whose nationality and identity were not released, threw stones at passing cars near Afikim kibbutz in northern Israel, an army spokeswoman said.

He then tried to stop and steal a vehicle before being spotted by members of the security forces, who opened fire at him.

The wounded man was evacuated to an Israeli hospital, the spokeswoman said, without giving further details.

Infiltrations into Israel from Jordanian territory are rare. The two countries signed a peace agreement in 1994.
