In total, 381,412 had crossed the sea aiming to resettle in Europe, according to figures updated on September 7 by the UN refugee agency.

Of those, 258,364 had landed in Greece and 121,000 in Italy, with another 1,953 to Spain and 94 in Malta.

Nearly 70 percent of all arrivals so far this year in Greece were people fleeing the conflict in Syria.

Only on Saturday, the United Nations estimated that the number of migrants and refugees who had crossed the Mediterranean since January 1 stood at 366,402.
