The French police announced on Wednesday that one of their dogs was killed during a dawn raid in the Saint-Denis suburb of Paris.

"Diesel, a seven-year-old Belgian Shepherd, a female assault dog ... Was killed by terrorists during the operation," France police tweeted, prompting an outpouring of support on social media for the fallen canine.

The raid targeted the suspected architect of Paris attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud. Seven people were reportedly arrested and two were killed in the siege—including a woman wearing an explosive suicide vest who blew up her vest.

French police also posted on Twitter that “assault and explosives search dogs are indispensable in the missions of the operators of the raid," alongside a picture of Diesel standing in front of a row of officers.

The "RIP Diesel" became a top trending term worldwide shortly after the post, and the hashtag #JeSuisChien (I am a dog) was used by many in a show of respect for Diesel in their tweets.
