Ties between the two countries have been strained of late over several issues including the developments in Ukraine and Syria, and Moscow hopes that President-elect Donald Trump would help repair the bilateral relations.

"Russia-US Cooperation in solving global and regional problems answers the interests of the entire world," the AP quoted the Russian president as saying in a state-of-the-nation address.

"We share responsibility for ensuring global security and stability and strengthening the non-proliferation regime," Putin said.

Tensions escalated after the Obama administration accused Moscow of hacking political sites and email accounts.

Kremlin rejected the accusations.
