Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra made a resounding statement as he secured his spot in both the World Championships men's javelin throw final and the 2024 Paris Olympics with a remarkable first attempt of 88.77m on Friday. The qualifying standard for the 2024 Paris Olympics is 85.50m, and Chopra's stellar performance comfortably surpassed this mark.
Chopra, aged 25, needed just one throw to assert his dominance in the qualifying round, topping Group A. With the automatic final qualification set at 83m and a personal best of 89.94m, Chopra chose not to take any further attempts and left the competition arena. In the same group, DP Manu secured the third spot with a best throw of 81.31m, awaiting Group B's results to determine his final qualification.
Qualifying for the final at the World Championships requires a throw of 83m or ranking among the top 12 performers from both groups, with each competitor granted three attempts during the qualifying round. Chopra's outstanding performance at the World Championships echoes his Tokyo Olympics display in 2021, where he needed just one throw of 86.65m to secure a place in the final and eventually clinched the gold medal with a historic throw of 87.58m.
