New Delhi: Dedicating the victory of Gurdaspur to Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu on Sunday said that the victory in Gurdaspur Lok Sabha bypolls for the Congress is a Diwali gift for "would be party president" Rahul Gandhi.

On Saturday, Sidhu had said that Rahul’s elevation to the Congress president's post will be a 'game changer' for the party.


Sidhu, a former BJP MP from Amritsar was formally inducted into Congress by vice-president Rahul Gandhi in Delhi, a fortnight before the Punjab elections 


Meanwhile, Congress leaders and workers celebrated the impending victory by bursting crackers and distributing sweets in several parts of Punjab after the party headed towards massive victory in the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat by-election. 


As per Election Commission officials, Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar extended his lead over his BJP rival Swaran Salaria by over 1 lakh votes after 10 rounds of counting on Sunday.
