Iran begins runoff Parliamentary Elections
A report said 130 hopefuls were competing for 65 seats in 33 constituencies, including Tehran with 25 undecided seats.
Tehran: Iran on Friday began runoff elections for more than one-fifth of the seats in Parliament, state TV reported.
The report said 130 hopefuls were competing for 65 seats in 33 constituencies, including the capital Tehran with 25 undecided seats. Of 50 hopefuls in Tehran, 29 are from opponents of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Tehran has 30 representatives in the 290-seat Parliament. Five of them were decided in the first round.
Conservative opponents of Ahmadinejad won a majority of seats of the new Parliament in the first round of elections in March. The official turnout in the first round was more than 64 percent. Parvin Ahmadinejad, the President`s younger sister, failed to win a seat in their hometown.
The new Parliament, which begins its work in late May, has no direct control over major policy matters like Iran`s nuclear programme, but it can influence the run-up to the election of a successor to Ahmadinejad next year.
