"AB de Villiers, he's one outstanding player of our generation. He was always so difficult to get out and a huge challenge," Johnson told Inside Cricket.

The left-arm fast bowler retired from all forms of international cricket on Tuesday.

"I remember the game at Centurion (in 2014) and I'd got a few quick wickets in that game and he came out to bat and looked so calm and composed and just played his natural game. It really is difficult when someone does come out like that and you're on top of your game, " the 34-year-old went on to say.

In that match, Johnson claimed 12 wickets and the man of the match award. However, de Villiers stood tall amidst the pile, top-scoring in both innings with 91 and 48.

"But it really is a great challenge and he's been one of the best players I've played against."

Johnson dismissed de Villiers five times in Test cricket.

The South African limited overs captain is already considered a legal of the game, and he has some of the most envious records in cricket.

The 31-year-old right-handed batsman has records of fastest 50 (16 balls), 100 (31 balls) and 150 (64 balls) in One Day Internationals in history.
