2nd ODI: Another Rohit Sharma ton goes in vain as Australia pull off record run chase at Gabba
Steve Smith-led Australia thrashed India by 7 wickets to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
Brisbane: Indian opener Rohit Sharma's consecutive ton against Australia went in vain as the Steve Smith-led side defeated India by seven wickets in the second ODI played at Brisbane Cricket Ground, Woolloongabba.
On yet another flat wicket, India posted a formidable total of 308 runs on board. To win the match, Australia needed to create history as no team had ever chased these many runs at the Gabba. The hosts did so, as they won the match with one over remaining.
MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat first. After losing Shikhar Dhawan early for 6, Virat Kohli and Rohit once again came to the rescue with an impressive 125-run stand for the second wicket. After Kohli was run-out for 59, Sharma added 131 runs with Ajinkya Rahane (89) for the third wicket.
In the last few overs, India once again failed to score runs in plenty and despite crossing the 300-run mark for second time in a row, they were probably 20-30 runs short.
In reply, Aaron Finch (71) and Shaun Marsh (71) provided hosts a solid start with a 145-run stand for the opening wicket. Once the openers were dismissed, Steve Smith and George Bailey frustrated the Indian bowlers by adding 78 runs for third wicket.
Even though India managed to dismiss Smith for 46, Bailey remained not out on 76 and played a crucial role in getting his team take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
