Mercury rises above normal in capital

degrees above normal aided by an approaching Western
Disturbance.
The maximum rose to 25.6 degrees Celsius, five degrees above normal and up from yesterday`s 22.6 degrees C.
The night temperature was also on an upward swing with the minimum touching 9.5 degrees Celcius, two degrees above normal and up from the previous day`s 6.7 degrees. The Weatherman attributed the rise in temperature to an appraoching Western Disturbance.
The national capital had been reeling under cold for several days with icy winds keeping the mercury below normal levels.
Contrary to the predictions of dense fog, Delhiites were lucky enough to have a sunny beginning as the skies were clear and devoid of fog. However, the day was partly cloudy. The MeT department has predicted generally cloudy sky tomorrow with possibility of rain or thundershowers in the morning. The weather is likely to become partly cloudy towards the afternoon or evening.
The maximum temperature would be around 21 degrees Celcius, while the minimum would hover around 12 degrees Celcius, the Weatherman said.
Last month saw the minimum temperature come down to 2.9 degrees Celsius on Christmas morning, the lowest of the season so far.
In the past 11 years, except for 2010, the month of January has recorded the lowest minimum temperature at below five degrees Celsius. The lowest in the past 11 years was on January eight of 2006 when the mercury had dipped to 0.2 deg C.
The record lowest minimum for the month was recorded on January 16, 1935 when mercury touched minus 0.6 degrees Celsius while the record highest maximum was 32.5 degrees on January 28, 2004.
