Patna: The overall flood situation in Bihar
on Tuesday showed signs of improvement with major rivers receding
as relief and rescue operations continued on war-footing.
Central Water Commission sources said the water level of Ganga was receding though the river had crossed the danger mark at some points. The river was flowing 77 cm above the danger mark at Gandhi Ghat (Patna) and 49 cm at Kahalgaon in Bhagalpur.
The water level of Sone was 92 cm above the danger mark at Maner in Patna, while Punpun was flowing 257 cm above the red mark at Sripalpur, the sources said.
The Burhi Gandak was flowing 52 cm above the danger mark at Khagaria and Bagmati, Kamala Balan, Kosi and Mahananda too were flowing above the danger marks but showing receding trend due to scanty rains in past 24 hours.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has directed the state water resources and disaster management departments to be on high alert and intensify relief and rescue operations. Following discharge of 9.50 lakh cusecs of water from Bansagar dam in Madhya Pradesh and Rihand dam in Uttar Pradesh into the river Sone during the past 48 hours several villages of five districts were inundated, official sources said.
The districts were Rohtas, Arwal, Patna, Aurangabad and Bhojpur as the river continued to rise along its course.
