Coimbatore: The recent murder of a woman school teacher allegedly by her student in Chennai will be among the issues that will be discussed at the 16th Conference of Tamil Nadu Teachers Association (TTA), scheduled here on February 19.
There was an urgent need to study the reasons behind young minds to indulge in such heinous crime and it was the social responsibility of parents, teachers, school management and also the administration to take steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents, TTA general secretary, S Muthusamy, told reporters here on Tuesday. Stating that the one-day conference would discuss the issue of seeking adequate protection for the teaching community in the backdrop of the incident, Muthusamy said former president, Dr A P J Abdul Kalam would address the meeting and provide necessary guidelines for the teachers, while discharging their duties.
Uma Maheshwari, a teacher at a private school in Chennai, was stabbed to death last week allegedly by a ninth standard student after he was repeatedly reprimanded by her over an issue. The boy was later arrested. Muthusamy claimed that though there had been instances of teachers caning students and parents reporting them to the police, this was perhaps the first incident in India, where a woman teacher was killed by a student.
The conference would also demand payment on par with the Central government scale for secondary grade teachers and formation of an Education Board without political interference, he said.
