India vs England, 4th Test, Day 3: Virat Kohli master-class helps hosts take crucial 51-run 1st innings lead

Virat Kohli also became the first Indian batsman to score 1000 Test runs in a calendar year, since Rahul Dravid did it in 2011.

New Delhi: It was another dominant display of batting prowess from India's Test captain Virat Kohli, who didn't let Murali Vijay's incredible ton go waste and went on to register a century himself.

India started off Day 3 in Mumbai at 146 for 1 with Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara looking to take the team forward through the tricky first session.

Murali Vijay became only the third Indian opener secure a hundred at the Wankhede Stadium as India continued their dominant run despite Cheteshwar Pujra's second-ball dismissal on 47 as the right-handed batsman failed to notch up another half century.

At lunch, Vijay was going strong on 124 after having batted for five and a half hours since Day 2, facing a total of 267 balls in which he struck three sixes and nine fours. Skipper Virat Kohli replaced Pujara and was 44 not out after a two-hour stay during which he has hit five fours in 86 balls.

The post lunch session belonged to England as Alastair Cook and Co. took four Indian wickets Kohli looked unfazed and continued building his innings. He was approaching yet another hundred Tea, hitting 83 off 171 balls laced with nine fours at that stage.

India were 348 for 6 as England were hoping to wrap-up the Indian tail under 400 but Virat had other ideas.

First a decent run with Ravindra Jadeja, who contributed 25 runs in the partnership with Kohli and then and 87-run partnership with Jayant Yadav got India into driver's seat by the end of third day's play.

In the process, Kohli also earned his 15th Test century in style, dictating terms and breaking milestones yet again.

The 28-year-old also became the first Indian batsman to score 1000 Test runs in a calendar year, since Rahul Dravid did it in 2011.

Not just that, he is also the third Indian captain to score 1000-plus runs in a year after Sachin Tendulkar (1997) and Dravid (2006).

With more than 500 runs in the series, he became only the second Indian captain to achieve this feat, after Sunil Gavaskar.

India will resume innings with the bat on Day 4 at 451/7, hoping to give England a lead of 120-150 runs and bat through the entire first session.
