New Delhi: Discarded Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh, who has produced match-winning performances in several of India's emphatic wins in the past, might be on his way back into the limited-overs squad.
According to a report in India Today, Indian coach Anil Kumble has asked the southpaw to undergo a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy on Wednesday.
The report also added that veteran left-hander Gautam Gambhir too underwent a fitness test today, and he could be back in the Indian Test squad if Lokesh Rahul misses the second Test against New Zealand due to a hamstring problem. Gambhir, who was a crucial member of the Indian team from 2008-2012, made his case for a comeback in India's 15-man squad for three-match Test series against New Zealand with back-to-back quality knocks in Duleep Trophy final.
While the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina failed to make an impact with the bat, the Delhi batsman, who was also the skipper of India Blue, posted scores of 77, 90, 59, 94, 36.
Gambhir was looking in absolute rhythm with a new stance in Duleep Trophy, where he amassed 356 runs from five innings. India Blue defeated Yuvraj-led India Red comprehensively by 355 runs.
Gambhir was dropped from the Test squad in December 2012, after India lost a four-match series 1-2 against Alastair Cook-England. Despite not being in the best of form, Gambhir hit 276 runs from six innings. (Did MS Dhoni trigger drop of Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir from Indian team? Here's the truth!)
The selectors recalled him back into the squad when India toured England in 2014, but the left-hander failed to make the opportunity count as he accumulated just 25 runs from four innings.
Yuvraj, on the other hand, has been in and out of the team on numerous occasions post his successful cancer treatment.
The Punjab cricketer last played an ODI in 2013, while he last donned the white jersey in 2012.
Considering his all-round skills, Yuvi was recalled into the Indian squad for T20I series against Australia in January this year. (Sourav Ganguly fans blast BCCI's Dream Team after Yuvraj Singh trumps Dada as 12th man)
He was making a comeback after two years, after that forgettable World Twenty20 final, where fans blamed his 21-ball 11 for Men in Blue's six-wicket loss in the summit clash.
After another comeback, Yuvraj regularly featured in the shortest format of the game for the Men in Blue where he went on to play Asia Cup 2016 as well as ICC World Twenty20.
But he was once again dropped for India's tour to Zimbabwe and has not played any international cricket since March this year. (Against which team did Yuvraj Singh hit six 6s in an over? Hazel Keech's reply was shocking)
While fans of both left-handers definitely want them back in India's respective squads, it remains to be seen whether their dream of playing for the country can turn true.
With India's long home season ahead, nothing is impossible for sure.
