A BJP councillor of Bhilai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Chhattisgarh was on Thursday shot dead and another person injured, by unidentified persons at Bhilai, about 50 km from Durg, a top police official said. The councillor, Suresh Bhagat was shot at from point blank range at around 7.30 pm, when he was at his office at camp one in Bhilai with his followers, Durg district Additional Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Shukla told reporters.
The councillor was killed on the spot, whereas his friend who suffered serious injuries, was rushed to hospital, he said.
Country made pistols were used in the attack, police said, adding that the incident could have been a result of an old enmity. Bhagat represented ward number 19 in the corporation.
Apprehending a law and order problem following the murder police has beefed up security throughout the industrial township, the official said.
