Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee led a procession in the city on Saturday evening to pressurise the UPA government at the Centre to roll back the recent petrol price hike.
While her intentions may have been to seek relief for the common man, the same haven’t gone down well with coalition partner Congress in the state. Congress MP Deepa Dash Munshi said if at all Mamata wants to protest, she should do so in the Cabinet and not on the streets.
Congress’ Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury even went on to say that the Trinamool Congress was free to pull out of the UPA government.
"The TMC is free to withdraw support from the UPA if it has problems," Chowdhury was quoted as saying. He also advised Mamata to follow the Goa model if she was not happy with petrol price hike.
The BJP government in Goa had recently reduced taxes on petrol, significantly reducing its price.
Mamata is today leading the anti-petrol hike procession from Jadavpore to Hazra crossing, covering a distance of 5 km in South Kolkata.
