The decision was taken days after Shahid Afridi stepped down as the skipper in the shortest format of the game after a poor show in ICC World Twenty20.

"I spoke to Sarfraz this morning and conveyed to him that he was our natural choice for this position," Shaharyar Khan, the PCB chairman was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo. "His appointment is open-ended. I wish him good luck in his new role."

Sarfaraz was already the vice-captain of the team in T20Is.
