The Bangaldeshi government released a white paper on the misuse of power, irregularities and corruption during the previous Sheikh Hasina's Awami league-led government and said the process of bringing transparency has begun in the country. The process of bringing transparency has just started with the release of these papers, Prime Minister's political secretary Haris Chowdhury told reporters at a crowded press conference while making public the 1,221-page report on the initial 40 cases of irregularity and corruption during the tenure of the previous government from 1996 to 2001.
Meanwhile, in a apparent retaliatory move, the opposition Awami League came up with allegations of corruption against BNP with specific charges against 13 top party leaders, including Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. It is evident that corruption is one of the main problems in Bangladesh. Although BNP in its pre-election campaign had assured people of eliminating corruption from society, after assuming power it has adopted a double standard, Awami League general fecretary Zillur Rahman told a press conference.
He alleged that the BNP government, on one hand, was filing cases against Sheikh Hasina, her cabinet colleagues and party lawmakers and civil servants, and on the other, withdrawing corruption charges that were filed by the bureau of anti-corruption against the BNP leaders during the tenure of Awami League.
