Watson received the news of the retirement via a text message from Johnson. The 34-year-old fast bowler retired on the last day of second Test against New Zealand last week.

Watson took to micro-blogging site Twitter to express his feelings.

Watson shares a great bond with Johnson, on-and-off the field as they played a lot of cricket together.

Both played for their native Queensland in domestic cricket.

Johnson played 73 Test matches for Australia and picked up 313 wickets.
